Luminox will be a transformational event that will bring together art, music and spectacle in one of Oxfordshire’s most historic places. The event will launch the 2007 celebrations that mark one thousand years of Oxfordshire and will take place over three nights – 15-17 March. For three hours each night, from 7-10pm, Oxford’s Broad Street area will be transformed into a transcendent environment by the light of a thousand flickering fires. The street becomes an atmospheric piazza for public promenade and relaxation allowing the public to experience the space in a unique way
The large-scale fire installation is by internationally renowned French art group, Carabosse, who will be working in collaboration with Oxford-based artist Ted Dewan. Carabosse have travelled across the world for fifteen years creating their fire installations in public spaces, currently working on projects for the European Capitals of Culture.
At the heart of Luminox’s elemental world is a 15m spire of bamboo and metal created by Ted Dewan. From the top of the spire hangs a slow-moving pendulum that makes approximately 1000 swings, each swing cycle representing a single year of Oxfordshire’s history. A programme of live music put together by Oxford Contemporary Music (OCM), creators of the acclaimed Power Plant event at Oxford Botanic Gardens, will form the soundtrack for the event.
